Carthay Circle was designated a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone in 1998. Closely bordering Beverly Hills it is situated between Schumacher Dr. (W) and South Fairfax Ave. (E) and Olympic Blvd. (S) and Wilshire Blvd. (N). Initially mostly one story homes were individually designed and in its heyday many celebrity actors resided there.
Today styles range from Spanish and English, Mediterranean, Colonial, Cape Cod to Modern. A planned development it was the first neighborhood to put the utilities out of site, underground. The Carthay Circle Neighborhood Association oversees the maintenance of the community’s aesthetic standards. Homes being modernized must adhere to historic guidelines.
Spreading out from Carthay Circle are South Carthay (south of Olympic, west of Crescent Heights) and Carthay Square (south of Olympic, east of Crescent Heights) where there is a mélange of single family homes, duplexes and apartment houses.
Like other areas Carthay has been “rediscovered”. The down-to-earth culturally diverse, friendly atmosphere is visible on the streets: neighbors conversing, residents strolling, kids at play, and pets on a leash. Local and International Buyers are drawn to the area because they like Carthay´s proximity to La Cienega Park, Little Ethiopia, Picfair Village, The Peterson Automotive Museum, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Beverly Center, and the immensely successful Grove.
